Leaf Lab: Classifying Type, Shape, and Structure

Leaves come in many different shapes, sizes, and even color! There are over a thousand different types of leaves. We can sort these leaves into groups based on their shape and structure.

In this activity, we are going to use our sensory science skills to observe the leaves we find outside. We will compare, contrast and sort them into groups based on simple properties.

Learning Objectives/Opportunities

  • Build basic knowledge about leaves

  • Science process skills: observing, classifying, comparing, and contrasting

  • Developmental Skills: sensory skills

Let’s Begin!

Materials

  • Leaves

  • Printed Leaf Classification Lab Worksheets

Directions:

  • Take a nature walk as a class or assign a nature walk as homework! While walking, collect leaves from all the trees and bushes you pass.

  • As a class, collect all the leaves into one pile.

  • Place the Flat and Broad, Scale-like, and Needle Leaf Type labels on the ground spread apart.

  • For each leaf, have students sort into the appropriate group.

  • Once all the leaves have been sorted, return the leaves to the central pile and replace the Leaf Type labels with the Leaf Shape labels.

  • Repeat sorting and returning for Shapes, Structure and Vein Structure.
